Scott Carothers, Corporate Instructional Officer

Michael Scott Carothers was born in Lubbock, Texas and grew up in a small farming community in the eastern portion of the South Plains.  He grew up knowing and appreciating the value and importance of education.  This focus on education has led him to the position of Academy Director for South Plains Academy in Lubbock, TX.

Mr. Carothers received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas Tech University and his Master of Education with an emphasis in administration from West Texa A&M University.  Mr. Carothers has served as high school teacher, elementary principal, and K-12 principal.  He has been working in education for over 18 years.

Mr. Carothers accepted the position at South Plains Academy in July 2011 and has served as the Academy Director since taking the position.  In August 2015, he accepted the position of Corporate Instructional Officer with Student Alternatives Programs, Inc. (SAPI).  He is extremely proud of the progress that SPA has made to meet the needs of all students.


Jennifer McLelland, Academy Director

Jenni McLelland was born in Fort Worth, Texas, where she grew up and then received her Bachelor's Degree in Speech Communication/Public Relations from Texas Christian University. She married and moved to Tahoka with her husband, who is a rancher in the Tahoka area, in 1985. Jenni's father was a professor at TCU and he instilled in her a love for education and teaching.  

After moving to Tahoka and discovering that she wanted to be a teacher, Mrs. McLelland went back to school and earned two Masters Degrees from Texas Tech University, one in Elementary Education and one in Educational Leadership.  Mrs. McLelland has served as an elementary teacher, assistant principal, an assistant superintendent, and director of a special education coop. 

Mrs. McLelland's love for children and education, led her to the position of Director of the South Plains Academy, where she began work on September 1st, 2015.  She is very excited to be here and is already extremely impressed with the administrators, teachers, staff, and students!


Trent Cook, Instructional Program Director

Trent Cook was born in Amarillo and raised by a farmer and master librarian in Friona, Texas.  Trent comes from a long line of educators that have influenced him to seek to also impact the next generation of students.  In 2008, he married Kelly who works as the Breast Cancer Patient Navigator for the YWCA of Lubbock.   Mr. Cook received his Bachelor’s degree in History of Religion from Texas Tech University in 2008, his teacher certification in 2010, and is currently obtaining his master’s degree from Lubbock Christian University in Educational Leadership. 

Mr. Cook is beginning his first year as Instructional Program Director at South Plains Academy.  Prior to becoming the Instructional Program Director at South Plains Academy, he served as the World Studies teacher for South Plains Academy for three years, and has been owner/operator of Barefoot Lawnscapes for the previous six years.  As a believer in the growth mindset, Mr. Cook seeks to impact teachers, as well as, students through his own life-long love for learning.
